Denali Dream - 14 Days
Discover this world of temperate rainforests, snow-capped mountains, and crystal-clear seas. This wilderness adventure for the budget-minded will bring you up close to Alaska's abundant and untouched wildlife -- a true nature lover's dream!
Our journey begins in Juneau, the capitol city of Alaska, where we'll embark on a voyage through the inside passage — the waterway formed by the impressive force of massive glaciers millions of years ago. Keep your camera handy as we wind our way around lush islands and glide by magnificent fjords, as this is home to orcas, humpback whales, bald eagles, dall porpoise and the bears that prowl the nearby shore.
Cruise past glacier carved cliffs and plummeting waterfalls of Lynn Canal, and hang out in friendly Haines and Port Chilkoot. Surrounded by forested mountains and glorious snow-capped peaks, you can hike in paradise and enjoy the magnificent views rewarding both the most mellow and the fiercest energy levels. Take advantage of more two-legged travel and rent a bicycle for some local sightseeing. Hop off your bike and head back out to the water for some sea-level exploration in a kayak. You can opt to head over to Skagway to ride on the spectacular White Pass Railroad, or feel the pit of your stomach in a thrilling airplane ride over Glacier Bay.
In the Yukon, hike from our camp in Kluane National Park to the "King's Throne" and absorb the magnificent views of the Elias Range and Kathleen Lake; later you'll be soaking your weary muscles in Tahkini hot springs.
Strike it rich in Dawson City, the center of the Klondike Gold Rush and let your imagination flow as you stroll through this historic town. Paddle a canoe on the Klondike or Yukon River or hike up to Midnight Dome. Spend some quiet time on the west side of town and check out the Paddle Wheel Graveyard, or if you are feelin' lady luck on your side, hop on the free ferry and play your best hand at Diamond Gertie's Dance Hall and Casino.
On our way to Chena Hot Springs, we'll cross over the breathtaking Top Of The World Highway and stop in at Chicken, the town named in honor of the small, difficult to spell game bird that provided sustenance during a harsh winter, the Ptarmigan.
Denali National Park is the climax of this trip! Backpack in to the heart of the park for a few nights and capture moose, caribou, fox, wolves and bears — in photographs, of course! Enjoy the day hikes on trails near the visitors center, take the free shuttle to Savage River and hike for views of Mt. McKinley. Splash down the Nenana River on a white water rafting trip, soar over the picturesque landscape on a flight-seeing plane ride. However you spend your time here, the raw beauty of this trackless wilderness with leave you breathless!
Our incredible journey ends in Anchorage. You should make hostel or hotel reservations before your arrival; many choose to do so during the trip. We do not recommend you fly out until the following day.
