California Ecology Adventure - 7 Days
From the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean, to the starry sky of the desert, this educational trip exposes students to a variety of California habitats while mixing in laughter, volunteer work and fun!
After our meet and greet, we set out to explore San Francisco's world-renowned sights and cruise through some of the city's famous districts. Mission Dolores, Twin Peaks, The Castro, Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Golden Gate Park and the Sutro Baths are among some of the possible stops before we check out the Golden Gate Bridge for breathtaking views of the city.
Once over the bridge we head to the Marin Headlands for an afternoon visit of the Marine Mammal Center of San Francisco. We'll tour the marine mammal hospital and state-of-the-art research facility under the guidance of one of the dedicated staff members.
Opt to spend time in the marine science classroom where students can develop their environmental awareness and strategize to keep marine life safe. Depending on who has been recently rescued, we'll have a chance to meet some of the patients, too! After our time at the center, we'll cruise to the beach for dinner, then re-board the coach and continue on through the night to Death Valley.
We arrive in beautiful Death Valley, the home to extremes such as lowest point, driest weather, and the hottest temperatures in North America. After breakfast, we'll stretch our legs on a morning hike through the marble narrows of Golden Canyon, and then head for the salt flats of Badwater Basin, which has an elevation of 282 feet below sea level!
An optional informative talk by a ranger-naturalist will offer us scientific explanations to the mysteries of this geological wonder.
Wander the grounds of Scotty's Castle or take an optional tour inside and get a glimpse into the world of the roaring 20's. Descend into the huge Ubehebe Crater, a 700-foot deep remnant of an ancient volcanic eruption, or stroll around the rim of the caldera and its neighbor, Little Hebe.
Spend the afternoon among the ripples and curves of the starfish shaped peaks while watching for wildlife at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Test your endurance and patience while ascending the giant, shifting ridges. Brush up on your favorite Star Wars quotes to truly experience this location where the planet Tatooine was filmed.
Wake up at Joshua Tree National Park, the home of the otherworldly, whimsical yucca trees that give it its name. Today is our service work day and the morning will be spent assisting the volunteer coordinators with environmentally-based projects that have a significant forward reach toward the future preservation of the natural resources of this national park.
Today you'll have multiple opportunities to hike and explore the boulder-strewn, unique landscape that you worked so hard to protect. Keep your eyes peeled for our cousin, the massive desert tortoise. At tonight's camp, explore the rocks more, or relax under the stars after a gourmet meal and share your days adventures with new friends. An optional informative visit from a ranger naturalist will help enhance our awareness of the flora and fauna of this biodiverse ecosystem.
We're back on the coast today and we start our day at San Simeon state beach. Take a tour of the opulent Hearst Castle, embark on a kayak excursion, perform coastal service work, or just soak in the beautiful scenery. Later, we roll north to our campground, tucked away under a grove of Monterey pines.
On our journey north, we cruise to the Coastal Redwoods of Big Sur. Stretch your legs on a stroll under the earth's tallest living things before checking out the seaside town of Monterey. Tour John Steinbeck's beloved Cannery Row, spend time spotting otters at Fisherman's Wharf, or visit the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium to marvel at the wonders of the Pacific Ocean before we return to San Francisco and say our goodbyes.
