Canyons & Coast - 16 Days

Get ready for a lesson in contrast as we explore the spectacular national parks and other special sites of Northern California and Southern Oregon.  Then shift gears as we visit the famous parks of the American Southwest, culminating in two days at the Grand Canyon.

Our journey starts with a drive across the Golden Gate Bridge. Redwood National Park is next, and a hike to the coast amongst these virgin giants, some over 100 meters tall, will make you feel small!

A beautiful drive along famous Highway 1 leads to a cookout dinner and camp in the mountains, and an optional whitewater rafting trip the following day.

At Crater Lake National Park, walk along the rim of this giant, blue mountain gem, or hike down to the lake shore. Reflect on all you have seen so far, as we visit a local mountain hot spring set deep in the Oregon countryside.

Take an afternoon to explore Ashland, a beautiful town surrounded by the Siskiyou and Cascades mountain ranges. Back in California, the peaks and valleys of Lassen Volcanic National Park are great for hiking. Scale Mt. Lassen, an ancient volcano, or explore the steam vents, mud pots, and other geothermal features of Bumpass Hell.

Go caving in Lava Beds National Monument or learn the story behind Captain Jack's Stronghold. A night drive leads us to an early morning arrival in San Francisco, where you'll have the day to explore the city. Hop back on the bus that same night, where we head southwest.

Hike the Angel's Landing Trail for an incredible view of Zion Canyon's sheer sandstone cliffs, then take an optional inner tube ride down the Virgin River. At Bryce Canyon, hike the Rim Trail or the Fairyland Trail to view the bizarre wind-sculpted hoodoos of Bryce Amphitheater.

Moving on to Arches National Park, hike the Devil's Garden Trail past eight of the park's best known features, including Landscape Arch.

For the ultimate Wild West experience, take a horseback ride or a jeep tour through the rugged desert-and-mesa landscape of Monument Valley.

Escape the desert heat with a cool plunge into Lake Powell. From Mather Point, you'll have two full days to explore the Grand Canyon. Hike a vertical mile to the bottom of the canyon and camp beside the Colorado River*, or walk along the South Rim to Hermit's Rest for a taste of wilderness solitude.

Check out a classic slice of small-town Americana on legendary Route 66, and wrap up your adventure in style with a night out on the Las Vegas Strip.

Enjoy a few more hours with your new friends before we drop you off at our final destination in San Francisco.
