Southern Road Trip - 17 Days
Experience the beauty of the American South on our ultimate Southern Road Trip. This epic cross-country journey will take you from San Francisco to South Beach with a party pit stop for Mardi Gras right in the middle! Our one-way trip will stop at some of the most beautiful national parks, towns, and monuments the South has to offer before ending in the party capital of Florida - Miami.
Day 1 - Joshua Tree National Park / Las Vegas:
Our first overnight drive leads to a morning arrival in Joshua Tree National Park. Trek this otherworldly landscape and test your rock-hopping skills while keeping an eye out for the whimsical trees for which the park was named. Later we travel north on Historic Route 66 across the Mojave Desert to watch a very different kind of wildlife with a night out in glitzy Las Vegas!
Day 2 - Grand Canyon National Park:
At Arizona's awe-inspiring park, stroll along the Rim Trail and behold the canyon's wonder from the many overlooks, or go for the gusto and descend into the canyon on one of the routes on Bright Angel or South Kaibab trails. Whichever you choose, enjoy the mind-blowing panorama.
Day 3 - Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument:
Absorb the nature of this rustic desert terrain of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument on a tour of the natural caves -- inhabited more than 700 years ago by ancestral Pueblo people. Reflect on ancient times while soaking in a natural hot springs under the starry skies of a cool desert night.
Day 4 - White Sands National Monument:
Traverse the largest gypsum sand dunes in the world and try to capture photos of African Onyx, or just roll around in the sparkling White Sands National Monument for your own playful photographic opportunities. Round-em up, we'll head out toward the "Lone Star State" after a desert sunset.
Days 5 & 6 - Big Bend National Park:
Our journey continues through Texas and magical Big Bend National Park. Hike wild Chisos Basin, a perfect window to this giant desert park. Get close to this wild and diverse land and keep watch for the Mule Ears as we head to Santa Elena Canyon for a hike along the Rio Grande. Next, we bid goodbye to the West at one of our favorite watering holes, then head for the hills!
Day 7 - Austin:
Hit the big city with your friends and jam to a concert in Austin, take a plunge in the 1,000-foot long natural spring-fed pool at Barton Springs, or explore the trendy cafes of the South Congress district. Later share your stories onboard the bus as we roll into the deep south.
Days 8 - 11 - New Orleans:
It's time for Mardi Gras! For the next four days, let this world famous festival take you on a ride of sensory overload as bead-adorned bodies and voodoo magic fill the parades that float by. Capture local folklore at the Voodoo Museum, then consider taking a cemetery tour of ornate and mysterious mausoleums. Feast on Cajun food while listening to the sweet sounds of sidewalk Zydeco, Dixieland jazz, or soft Delta blues that beat from every corner. Laissez le bon temps rouler!
Day 12 - Gulf Shores:
Let the good times roll, indeed! After a morning beignet, cafe au lait and last chance to soak up atmosphere of the Big Easy, we will board our bus and head to the Gulf Shores in Alabama. A day perfect to decompress and release your inner beach bum, kick back on this breathtaking span of turquoise waters and bleach-blonde sands.
Day 13 - Savannah:
Enter the land of Southern belles, steamboats, and down-home cooking with a day in historic Savannah, Georgia. You'll instantly fall under its spell as you walk along its cobblestone streets and take in its charm. Visit Bonaventure Cemetery and find out why Savannah is considered "America's Most Haunted City" for yourself.
Day 14 - St. Augustine:
First settled in 1565 by the Spanish, St. Augustine is the oldest occupied settlement in the states. Heavily influenced by both the Spanish and British, walking through the city is like seeing a history book come alive. A once thriving port town, St. Augustine was once a target for pirates including Sir Francis Drake. Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum, indeed.
Throw on your swimsuit and get ready for a day in the water! Juniper Springs is home to one of the oldest and most popular recreation facilities in Florida. The bubbling spring emerges from underneath a massive shady canopy of palms and native habitat creating the perfect natural swimming pool to frolic and float in. Optional canoe rental is also available or perhaps you'll enjoy a hike on one of the various nature trails around the recreation area bursting with abundant wildlife.
Rise and shine early to get ready for the Happiest Place on Earth! Experience one of Disney's four amazing theme parks for the day including Epcot center, Hollywood Studios, the animal Kingdom or home of Mickey and the gang: the magic kingdom itself. Or if you prefer, spend the day at one of the free themed areas and enjoy many complementary activities the resort has to offer. Check out the famous House of Blues at Downtown Disney or take a futuristic trip around the perimeter on the monorail. Explore the Boardwalk in the evening for a picturesque sunset and water/light show just before reuniting with the group to head out toward your next exciting destination.
Day 17 - Everglades:
It's not a trip to Florida without a stop in the Everglades. This unique region of tropical wetlands is home to a variety of wildlife including the American crocodile. Hop aboard an airboat and take a ride to see these fascinating creatures up close and personal.
Day 18 - South Beach:
Miami isn't known as the Party Capital of Florida for nothing. End your adventure in South Beach - known as one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the country. From trendy shops to eccentric locals and a club scene that goes on all night long - South Beach is the perfect way to end your trip with your new friends.
