Tropical Trek - 14 Days
Explore ancient Mayan ruins, swim under cascading waterfalls, bask in the sun on white-sand Caribbean beaches and discover romance on starry nights. Round-trip from Cancun, this two-week excursion is the ultimate Yucatan Peninsula trek!
After our morning meet and greet in Cancun, we'll head to the interior of Quintana Roo to the jungle ruins of Coba. Climb to the top of Nohoc Mul, the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan, for an unparalleled view of the grounds and surrounding rainforest.
Crossing into Yucatan, we'll camp in Rio Lagartos and visit the regional Biosphere Reserve, home to 30,000 pink flamingos, the largest population in the world! Take an optional tour of the wetlands by boat or kayak, or stay up into the night and go searching for crocodiles on a guided boat trip.
In Merida, shop for the world's best hammocks and enjoy a little nightlife before we make our way to Uxmal for a light and sound spectacle that will make you appreciate the natural brilliance of the stars at night. The following day you'll want to tour the Pyramid of the Magician and, naturally, the House of the Turtles.
Marvel at the wisdom of the ancients at the ruins of Chichen-Itza on the equinox. Witness the winged serpent make its descent along the side of El Castillo, also known as the Pyramid of Kukulkan, a three-dimensional representation of the Mayan Calendar. Tonight we'll camp under the stars in a Yucatan meadow and wake to a refreshing dip in the subterranean waters of Cenote Dzitnup. We'll have lunch in the zocalo of the colonial city of Valladolid before heading to Tulum.
What better way to wake than sunrise over the Caribbean? Home to fascinating coastal ruins perched atop limestone cliffs, enter this ancient fortress to visit the House of Frescoes and the Temple of the Descending God. You'll have two full days to explore and relax on the beach. Hang your hammock under a shady palm or kick back on the beach with a refreshing drink.
After all of that sun, we'll head to the lush tropical grounds of Cenote Azul for a cool, freshwater dip and later visit the wooded ruins of Kohunlich, renowned for the giant faces of sun god Kinich Ahau on the Temple of the Masks.
At Palenque, explore the ruins and browse the work of local Mayan artisans on the steps of the ancient pyramids before we camp at the hip jungle resort of Mayabell. You'll wake to the sunrise and the indescribable call of howler monkeys in the nearby treetops!
We'll have a full day to play and explore the glittering blue cascades of Agua Azul in Chiapas. Hire a local guide and journey downriver to see seven giant horseshoe falls, or explore the hundreds of smaller falls near our campsite. You'll drift into dreamland listening to the water's lullaby just outside your tent!
After a sumptuous breakfast, we'll head to the waterfall at Misol Ha which plunges over 100 feet into a giant jungle pool. Go for a dip, then ask the local kids to show you the hidden cave behind the waterfall.
Back in Quintana Roo, we'll stop at Cenote Aktun Ha for a refreshing swim before heading up the coast. After a scenic drive up the Mayan Riviera, we'll arrive in Cancun in the afternoon to say our goodbyes.
