Pyramids and Playas - 14 Days
Discover the archaeologist inside you, absorb the tranquility of white-sand beaches and find romance on starry nights! This two-week camping adventure runs round-trip from Cancun and explores the ancient temples and lush jungle waterfalls of the Mayan Riviera and Yucatan peninsula, including Belize and Guatemala.
After our morning departure from Cancun, we head straight for the beach-side ruins of Tulum to relax in the warm sun and surf of the Caribbean. Rinse away the day and go for a swim in the fresh water of cenote Aktun Ha, then indulge in a gourmet cook-out before we head south to the border.
Once we breeze into Belize, a scenic afternoon drive delivers us to the Macal River Valley and the village of San Ignacio. Options here include inner-tubing, a guided trek to ruins, exploring the small town, guided caving, or just taking it easy at our jungle camp.
Surrounded by lush vegetation, the grounds of Tikal are home to exotic animals, sacred temples and the treasures within. Explore this archaeological highlight and journey back into history. We'll camp right in the park where you'll wake to the indescribable call of howler monkeys. Feel at home with them on an optional zip-line canopy tour through the jungle!
The dense tropical rainforest is home to many exotic species of wildlife, watch for them as we roll through the Peten Jungle. We'll stop at Poptun and Finca Ixobel, where the homemade baked goods fill the air with their intoxicating aroma. Dance the night away to Reggaeton and go for a midnight dip in their swimming hole. Later, we're off by boat to explore Livingston. Hang out in the cafes of this Garifuna influenced town, or hike to the outlying jungle waterfalls.
Near Guatemala's largest lake, Lake Isabel, the ultimate in relaxation is just a short hike away, a hidden hot waterfall with deep pools of incredible steaming, perfect for swimming! On your way back to our lakeside camp, watch for a local tractor and its daily load, a trailer full of school kids.
We'll make our way to the village of Rio Dulce, and explore the hub of the surrounding aquatic byways. Bidding Guatemala good-bye, we head back to Belize and leave our rolling home behind. All aboard the water ferry; we're off to Cay Caulker for three days of island bliss! Here, you will be surrounded by excellent beaches, where you can snorkel your days away, kayak to the Cay's uninhabited neighboring islands, organize a scuba excursion, or simply soak up some rays before an evening in one of the beach-side bars.
After reuniting with our bus, we journey to Majahual, a sleepy little town tucked away on a remote Caribbean beach. Optional activities here include snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing the turquoise seas. We wrap up our trip with a scenic drive up the Mayan Riviera and in the afternoon, say our good-byes in Cancun.
