West Coast Wonder - 14 Days

From sandy California beaches to the red cliffs of Zion, this trip hits all the best spots of the geographically diverse West Coast of America.

We meet and greet in Los Angeles and head out of the city to Joshua Tree National Park. Hike the Wonderland of Rocks Trail or go bouldering, keeping an eye out for the whimsical trees for which the park was named. We'll share a gourmet cookout, then tell some tall tales at our campsite under the desert sky.

Glamorous Las Vegas is our next destination. Take a limousine tour of the strip, see the legendary comedy improv of Second City, or ride the adrenaline-pumping roller coasters on top of the Stratosphere.

The following day, spend extra time in Vegas or ride with us to Zion National Park. Hike to Angel's Landing for breathtaking views of Zion Canyon's sheer sandstone cliffs, then go for a swim or take an optional inner tube ride on the Virgin River before we turn toward the setting sun and go west.

In San Francisco, ride a cable car, dine at a sidewalk cafe in North Beach, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, or journey through the Dragon's Gate into Chinatown to explore exotic delights. After your urban adventure, we head to the breathtaking natural surroundings of Yosemite National Park.

Admire the majestic Bridalveil and Yosemite Falls, spot rock climbers on El Capitan, or hike up the Mist Trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls. Choose from a wide variety of trails that offer spectacular views, rent a cruiser bike or a river raft, or explore the valley floor via the free Yosemite shuttle.

Later, we'll travel through the thrilling Tioga Pass and share a gourmet cookout in our camp, high in a pine forest in the eastern Sierra Nevada. The next day we'll travel to an ancient lake; formed over 1 million years ago, it's one of the oldest lakes in North America. Go for a float in the salty, alkaline water, and watch for wildlife while exploring the fragile tufa spires.

Enjoy a refreshing dip at June Lake before we climb back over the 9,945 ft Tioga pass to Tuolumne Meadows, the largest sub-alpine meadow in the Sierras. Hike to a stunning view on glacier-formed Lembert dome, swim in the Tuolumne River, or hang out in the meadow with your camera and capture the resident wildlife.

Walk through a magnificent grove of Giant Sequoias, the largest living things on earth, before returning to San Francisco for a fun-filled weekend. You'll have three full days to explore the city, either on your own or with your new friends. Our friendly hostel and travel office staff will be happy to share their tips on walking tours, museums, bike rentals, parks and beaches, day trips to Muir Woods and Wine Country, funky shopping streets, bars, clubs, and music venues.

On Monday morning, we'll head south down the legendary Pacific Coast Highway. Hit the beach in Santa Cruz while surfers challenge the waves in Steamer Lane, or check out the Surfing Museum housed in the Mark Abbott Memorial lighthouse. In Monterey, stroll along John Steinbeck's beloved Cannery Row, spend some time at Fisherman's Wharf, or pay a visit to the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Share your stories around the campfire at our campsite under the coastal redwoods of Big Sur, and slumber peacefully under the tallest living trees on earth. After a gourmet breakfast, we continue south to San Simeon State Park. Take a tour of the opulent Hearst Castle, hike through the surrounding wetlands, go sea kayaking in the bay, or just relax on the beach!

Although this incredible adventure ends in Los Angeles, your journey doesn't have to. Join our Canyons of the West and explore Bryce, Monument Valley, Arches, the Grand Canyon and more!
