You’ve made it- you’re in warm, sunny California! As you
dream of beautiful beaches, sexy tans and all of the cute outfits you have
planned out, your plane lands… in San Francisco. Whoops. While it may be a part
of the Golden State, during the winter months (and the summer months, as a
matter of fact) it does a less than stellar job of living up to California’s
reputation. To make things short, it rains here a lot. Like, a lot. While the
East Coast gets a physical representation of the miserable weather (snow), we
just get ruined hairdos and broken umbrellas. But you’re a traveler- you’ve
been around the world; a little rain won’t stop you from having the time of
your life right? I’ve compiled a list of things to do when the rest of the city
is cowering indoors:

Go see a movie!

Worry not, you will not be forced to go see the latest
Cameron Diaz movie (unless you want to). We here in SF love a good film, and we
have enough movie theaters to prove it.

The Metreon-
Blockbuster-type movie theater, and also the site of an indoor farmer’s market
EVERYDAY! Broke? Walk around and ask questions- they love giving out free
samples.

The Red Vic- Indie
movies galore! Located on Haight Street, this movie theater shows an awesome
mix of modern and older favorites. And of course, they sell organic treats (no
Junior Mints for you!).

Kabuki Theater- A
nice mix of both old and new movies- this theater also has IMAX movies (if
watching it on a normal screen isn’t exciting enough for you). And kiss your
liquor-sneaking days away: Kabuki has a bar inside.

Hang out in a bookstore!

We San Franciscans love bookstores. Now, you don’t have to
buy any books- you can just hang out there and read, maybe meet some brainy
studs (or ladies) to enjoy your stay in SF with (wink wink). There’s a ton in
the city, these are just a few of the coolest in my humble opinion.

City Lights- Located
on Broadway and Columbus, this place is perfect for browsing… actually, it’s
kind of difficult to find a specific book here, so don’t go here if you crave
order. Really knowledgeable staff, awesome atmosphere, and less than 5 mins
from the GT= win!

Bound Together Anarchist Collective Bookstore- Whether you love the government or pray for
revolution every night, this bookstore is an interesting experience for anyone.
Run by volunteers, they’ll help you find the latest zines and other literature
that you’ll never find at Barnes and Nobles.

Here’s the thing about SF: If it’s raining here, that does
not necessarily mean it’s raining anywhere else in the Bay area. So what’s the
best way to deal with a rainy day? Leave! The new Mini Adventures are day trips
to areas outside of San Francisco, such as Santa Cruz, Muir Woods, wine country,
etc… At only $25, you get a ride and a tour around some truly beautiful places
in the San Francisco area. Our first one heads to Santa Cruz on March 13^th,
and it sounds like the perfect way to escape a rainy San Francisco day:

Cruise to
our neighborhood coastal farming community of Half Moon Bay for coffee and then
head for a splash in local tidepools or a stroll on the beach. Be on the
lookout for whales, elephant seals and the occasional surfer on the way to Big
Basin! Hike creek-side to the lesser known redwood grove or just chill-out and
watch the waves. We will swing through Santa Cruz before we wrap up the days
adventure with multiple Bay Area public transportation drop offs.

Or, you can do my personal favorite thing to do on rainy
days:

SLEEP AND EAT ALL DAY LONG! Or cook delicious food for
the front desk staff to eat. We hate bad weather too!

I was fortunate enough around November last year to have gone on a Green Tortoise bus trip. I have worked here for close to 2 years and from the first day I was skeptical of these trips we offered. Sure I love nature, and I liked the idea, but could it really be as awesome as all my co-workers were saying? Then I started to believe it, guest after guest was telling me about how much fun they had, what a life changing experience it was. So I started to believe, but I spent some time near Missouri when I was growing up so I started feeling like I needed to be shown what it was all about. I went on the Death valley loop, and I had the best 4 day vacation I could have asked for. The food was awesome, I have never eaten so well in a camping scenario let alone being an omnivore I wasn’t put out that it was vegetarian fair at all, in fact it seemed almost more delicious. The scenery was just breathtaking and the pace of our travels never seemed rushed, nor did I feel that we lingered too long. The night sky and the campfire brought out the bonding with all the people on the bus, I read some stories around the fire, and we all talked and got to know each other. Quite frankly I had been shown and then some, I got addicted so that now all I can think about is when can I go on my next trip? How will I be able to afford the time off to squeeze as many in as I can? So I thought I would highlight some of my favorite trips here that don’t get as much love as they should, these are trips I am trying to go on because they are places less traveled and more beautiful in my opinion. First we have the Pacific Trek, http://www.greentortoise.com/adventures/pacific.trek.redwoods.coast.html , a nice little jaunt up to Oregon, including Crater Lake and Lassen Volcanic park among other sites. A great trip to go on and a bunch of views that will not only impress you but make you see the true beauty available on nature. Next I wanted to plug my home, Alaska, we have two awesome trips that can show you a great time in the great white north. And the Alaska expedition goes All the way from San Francisco to Alaska through the Canadian coast, a trip I would love to take but a commitment that is intense, 27 days traveling through some of the most gorgeous places in the world. Noise Pop Starts February 23 until March 1st. For those of you unfamiliar with the many different festivals and whatnot of San Francisco this is one of my favorites.  Rather than a big outdoor

festival it is split up over various clubs and venues throughout San Francisco.  So it is actually impossible to see absolutely everything, but the focus is on bands on the more independent side of things.  So the pre party is gonna be killer.  It will be taking the place of the California Academy of Sciences usual Nightlife party on Feb. 18th or tomorrow, the price is $12, there will be 2 DJ’s and 2 bands.  Brookhaven, which is some really great ambient road music would be what it reminds me of.  I really like them.  Then The Frail will be playing as well, kinda electronica Nintendo pop.  Then Friday there will be a free art show at Project One.  Then come the 23rd of

February we kick things off.  There Will be a plethora of bands Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, Magnetic Fields, Deerhoof, The Ghost of a Saber Toothed Tiger, Atlas Sound, The Mumlers, Scissors for Lefty, Mezzanine, Mirah, Black Praire, dizzy balloon, and many more.  There

One of the most common questions we get here at the Green Tortoise is
"Where can I get something to eat." This question is easy enough to
answer during the day, but after the bars close around 2 am it becomes
much harder to answer. Luckily, though it may require a cab ride, we
have a solution. Listed here are a few of the most recommended places
to grab a bite to eat after the bars close at 2:00 am. All listings
carry typical diner fare (Breakfast food, maybe a burger or steak.) A
possible exception being Happy Donuts which would serve well, donuts.

The people at Yelp have this to say about Cafe Mason: "Cafe Mason is
totally reliable and for a place that's open 24 hours
it has a nice welcoming atmosphere and the people who work here don't
seem to hate it. It's in a really busy area of the City so enjoy the
show while you're here." It's a bit far but I assure you, being one of
the Graveyard shift workers, that we have no problem calling you a cab
to get there.

If you’re like me, addicted to the food network, than you may have seen a 

little show known as “The Best Thing I Ever Ate”. 

It’s a show dedicated to chefs remembering their favorite foods 

at different restaurants around the country. 

And every episode there seems to be a San Francisco restaurant featured, in 

fact half of theseplaces are in the Ferry Building!

Chinese New Year is a two-week Spring Festival 

celebrated for over 5,000 years in China. 

The San Francisco Chinese New Year celebration 

originated in the 1860's during the Gold Rush

days and is now the largest Asian event in

North America as well as the largest general 

market event in Northern California. 

The celebration includes two major fairs, 

the Chinese New Year Flower Fair and 

The Chinatown Community Street Fair. 

All the festivities culminate with 

Chinese New Year Parade 

on Saturday February 27th from 5:30pm to 8pm. 

But 1st there is: 

The Chinese New Year Flower Fair blossoms with an 

abundance of fresh auspicious flowers such as 

peach blossoms, narcissus, orchids, snapdragons, 

and chrysanthemums. And fruits such as oranges 

and tangerines. Oranges and tangerines are 

symbols for abundant happiness. Tangerines with 

leaves intact assure that one's relationship with 

the other remains secure. It is of utmost importance 

to have flowers and floral decoration in the home 

for the New Year.

the weekend of the Chinese New Year Parade and is 

an opportunity for attendees to experience Chinese 

cultural arts such as lantern and kite making, 

calligraphy, fine arts demonstrations, folk dance, 

and puppet shows.  Traditional and modern 

entertainment performs on the main stage throughout 

both days. Enjoy colorful folk dance from throughout 

Asia, acrobats, lion dancing, and magic demonstrations. 

Attendance at the two day fair is about 500,000.

The time has come again for the Great American Holiday known as the Super Bowl.  Come February 7th twill be a day full of hot dogs, bean dip, and beer.  'Tis a day where you can be completely and totally embroiled in a sport without moving anything but your thumb.  This year there is an epic showdown between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints.  If you want to know who to root for it's an American tradition to root for the underdog and in this case its definitely the Saints.  Its their first time to the SuperBowl!  Here at the Tortoise we will be showing the game in the Ballroom for your football education.  That's right I said it football.  But if you wanted to venture out in some sort of anthropological expedition to see what sports bars look like on this day of days I have a few that will be up to snuff.

As you probably know, the Green Tortoise is one of the most

As we all know one of the most expensive parts about traveling is food.  We all need it to survive, some of us believe its intrinsic to the experience of traveling.  The best way I have found to combat the high cost of keeping feed while still feeling emotionally nourished  is to find the best outdoor markets in whatever city I am in.  Lucky for those who are fortunate enough to stay here at the tortoise we have a full service kitchen, full of spices, cookware, and dishes.  We have a whole guest fridge and pantry that can be used for storing more than just your stash of booze.

So much for Rachel Rays $40 a day here's the Green Tortoise $24* a day.

So here's the three things you need to know.

1. The Farmers markets contain more that just amazing produce.  A lot of the markets here  also double as showcases for local artists and jewelers.  They also have locally made fare such as fresh baked bread, fresh roasted coffee, and locally collected honey and cheeses.

2. The outdoor markets in San Francisco are also conveniently located next to all kinds of sight seeing goodness.

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is located in the Ferry Building at Market and Embarcadero.  These people really have a way with names, I tell ya.  The ferry building itself is a market all week long with lovely restaurants and bookshops, but on occasion the outdoor portion get its market on.  These occasions are Tuesdays & Thursdays (the days we don't have free dinner) from 10am to 2pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.  If its a holiday and you want to make sure that its still open go to www.cuesa.org      

The Fillmore Farmers' Market is in...wait for it... Fillmore at O'Farrell.  Genius naming once again.  The Fillmore district is known for a few things.  It is known for being a famous jazz district as well as a current music scene. It is also right next to Japan Town/Little Osaka.  Two must see sights in San Francisco.  Thus Market is every Saturday from 9am to 1pm.  For more info go to www.pcfma.com

3. Those markets are excellent if you happen to be here on those days, however, a market that is here every day a week right out our front door is China Town open from sun up to sun down.  The main drag of china town with the dragon gates is on Grant St.  One street over is Stockton St. and that is where you will find some of the freshest produce and seafood.  Not to mention a huge variety of awesome teas. 

So happy shopping my merry travelers!  And remember there is a free dinner every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Not to mention a free breakfast every morning, all you need to do is fill in the blanks.

Sound kind of like an indie band that longs to be a blues band.

 1/23 Cold War Kids – Fillmore, these guys are pretty decent, I rather
enjoy their song St. John. So if you like pop music that’s not stale
a trite check them out.

1/23 The Pharcyde – Yoshi’s SF, Rap, hip hop, trip hop, whatever you
wanna call your genre these guys transcend it all to make some great
grooves, with a killer message. This show should be awesome.

1/24 Persephone’s Bees – Café Du Nord, Norwegian Pop done well, sure
in 10 years maybe they’ll just be another ABBA in the minds of our
children, but they have a knack for some good tunes.

Now I have not been to any of these places, but they all have 4 stars or better on yelp, so they must be amazing! Yelp does not lie.

With the word green in the name how can you go wrong!  No, really, San Francisco has a ton of boutique independent bookstores in all its various neighborhoods but this has to be one of the best.  Someone summed it up much better than I could on Yelp.com:               
"As soon as I walked into The Green Arcade, I felt I knew the owner and his aesthetic.  He has a great eye for current releases and classics, with a nicely edited selection of books on modern and sustainable architecture, street art, social justice, food history, cookbooks with an emphasis on San Francisco, smartly illustrated kids storybooks...even sustainable needlecrafts.  And how many bookstores have a section called 'Birds' next to a section called 'Bees?'"
All this plus a vintage juke box makes Kaija a happy shopper.

At Doc’s Clock you only have to think about the impact your night out has on your head, not on the environment. We have a large selection of local, sustainable and organic products. So once you rent your bike and ride over to see the Golden Gate Bridge you can stop here on your way to see Golden Gate Park.

Few things are as satisfying as finding an awesome pizzeria. You had your first child? Congrats. Graduated from college magna cum laude? Go you! However, upon biting into a slice of cheesy deliciousness these previously great things pale in comparison- you’ve found some awesome pizza.
In San Francisco, we sure do love us some pizza. Since the Green Tortoise is located in North Beach, the Italian section of SF, one would assume that pizza is limited to our little area right? Wrong! Pizza can be found in all districts of our fair city, and in this extremely wordy blog, I’ll highlight some of the GT staff’s favorite pizza haunts!

Literally right across the street, this restaurant has some of the best pizza in the SF Bay area. Feel free to eat in the restaurant, or order take-out. Word of warning: Depending on what you order, the pizza can be pretty pricey.

If you’re staying at the GT, there is no excuse to ignore this pizzeria. Cheap, close and delicious, Golden Boy is open until 2am, so after a night of bar-hopping, go grab a slice.

Hands down one of the most creative menu options in the city, and although this place is pretty far away, on Monday nights they have all-you-can-eat pizza and salad for $10.95. Also, they will make any pizza with soy cheese if you’re lactose intolerant or just an annoying vegan (like myself).
