As you probably know, the Green Tortoise is one of the most
romantic places in the world. Dancing below the disco ball in the ballroom,
admiring your lover’s reflection on the computer screen in the internet room,
feeding each other baked potatoes on one of our free dinner nights… phew, is it
hot in here? So naturally, there’s no better place to come on Valentine’s Day
than the Green Tortoise! Throughout the city, there are plenty of other ways to
celebrate this widely anticipated (and even more widely hated) day, so read
away to learn about the fun things going on in our fair city!
The Great San Francisco Pillow Fight
Nothing says “I love you” quite like bashing your
significant other in the face with a pillow. Luckily, SF understands this, and
that is why the Pillow Fight has been one of the most popular ways to spend
V-day since its launch in 2006. Did your girlfriend just dump you? Your husband
refuses to take out the garbage? Please, do us all a favor and take it out on a
complete stranger. For all the rules, visit http://www.pillowfight.info/
WHEN: 6PM
WHERE: Justin Herman Plaza
WHY: Because you have repressed rage issues.
12th Annual SF Independent Film Festival
This two week festival is in the world- famous Roxie Theater
in the Mission district. Completely devoid of any films involving Matthew
McConaughey or Cameron Diaz, these movies have soul and low budgets, thus
resulting in some solid Valentine’s Day awesomeness. Bring a date to impress
with your edginess, or just go alone and make some new Indie-film-loving
friends! For a full schedule, check out http://www.sfindie.com/
WHEN: Check listings
WHERE: Roxie Theater, 3117 16th Street
WHY: You didn’t really like Avatar.
Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers
If the title alone didn’t convince you, let me persuade you
with the description from their website: Lavay Smith is internationally
recognized as The Queen of classic Jazz & Blues in the authentic style of
the 1940's and 1950's. Lavay's last album received a prestigious 4 & 1/2
Star review in Downbeat magazine and reached the top 10 on the National
Billboard Jazz Charts. This is one of San Francisco’s favorite swing and jump
blues band. If you’re not in the mood to
bump and grind to house music, culture yourself up and check this show out!
WHEN: 8PM and 10PM
WHERE: 401 Mason Street
WHY: You’re sick of Tiesto remixes.
LoveSick 3
Looking to spice up your Valentine’s Day? Check out this lingerie
fashion show, complete with a cash bar, DJ’s, art installations, trunk show,
and a kissing/photobooth! The tickets are $20, but seeing some lingerie-clad
ladies (and gents—twist!) is priceless. Feeling love sick? Make your way to
LoveSick 3 to cure all that ails you (sorry, I had to).
WHEN: 7PM
WHERE: 119 Utah Street
WHY: All of my other listings look boring.
Now, as always, feel free to hang back and bask in the
romantic vibes that exude from the GT. There will be live music in the
Ballroom, so as you dance and drink your night away, remember: No matter what
happens, we love you. Well, unless you don’t bring your sheets down when you
check out.
