Once a week a miracle sweeps through the Bay Area and the San Francisco MUNI actually does something right. Throughout the morning and afternoon on Sundays, for $1.50, San Francisco passengers can travel on the number 76 bus to and from the Marin Headlands. Located northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge on the Pacific Coast, the Marin Headlands is a breathtaking “national recreation area.” The bus ride takes around 30 minutes one-way, traverses the Golden Gate Bridge, winds up steep cliffs, and cuts through sagebrush hills rife with storybook beasts (deer). This magical journey into the quintessential Californian backwoods makes for a superb half a day trip, but pack your own food and wine, because there are no general stores in the park (though they do have restrooms).
Complete with decommissioned Nike missile silos, decrepit WWII era military bunkers, stunning beaches and cliffside hikes that will blow you away (be careful and stay on the trails, as hikers are regularly falling to their deaths from the cliffs), the Marin Headlands is an amazing place all around. Activities ranging from hiking, biking, surfing, horseback riding, camping, seal, whale, and bird watching, as well as a slew of other outdoor beach prospects will assist in detoxification after a harsh Saturday night.

If you endure a beautiful one-hour hike, you'll reach the equally popular Muir Beach: 
While you're out there, try to check out the Marine Mammal Center, where marine biologists rehabilitate sick and injured sea mammals, many of which are recovering drug addicts and are themselves detoxing (see their website, linked below, for visiting info).

A trip out to the gorgeous headlands will have you forgetting that you’re just a few miles away from the city afflictions of traffic insanity, white-collared financial district criminal gang networks, and the wild inaccuracies of MUNI. On that note, make sure that you don’t miss the last bus back to SF, as Sunday evenings are live music nights at the GT.
