“Death Valley” may at first seem to be a bit of a misnomer. The land was dubbed thusly when, hot on the trail of manifest destiny, prospectors crossed the desert on their way to Gold Country. Records suggest that only one prospector met his maker whilst traversing the valley. Statistically and historically inaccurate, but aesthetically precise – Death Valley earned its title because the scenery recalls the arid infinity of the great beyond. Not in a grotesque sense, but its beautiful sun-bleached sand, rolling vistas and towering rock seems a perfect setting for Dante and Virgil to explore. 
Death Valley is one of this country’s most stunning destinations, and one of its least forgiving. Temperatures occasionally peak 125 F, and the terrain is not the easiest to traverse.
